Lee Min Ho is popularly known for his lead role in the recently finished Korean drama Boys Over Flowers, a remake of the Japanese Hana Yori Dango. Personally, I didn’t think he was that hot; his hairstyle bothered me the most. But wow, this ~~commercial~~ music video is a totally different story. About the drama, dear Mother informed me that “ajjumas” (ye olde korean ladies) across the country found Gu Jon Pyo (Min Ho’s lead character) endearing because they looked at him and thought, “That is the son I wish I had” or “That is the boyfriend I wish I had” and so on. He was many people’s ideal guy I suppose. Perhaps… girl too? Watch Lee Min Ho apply make up and put girls to SHAME.

Jessica Gomez is really dyanamic in this video. She looks Korean, but don’t let her looks fool you: she’s a mix of Portugal, Singapore, and China. [Read Pop Seoul’s article “Jessica Gomez is not Korean”] I was immediately intrigued and youtube’d her, and found this LG Bikini Touch cell phone commercial she did. Man, I still have “Bikini! Touch! Bikini! Touch! Biki-” stuck in my head.

Review

1. Bolero: I’m so torn over what to say of this ballad. On the one hand, it’s forgettable and boring. I checked the lyrics to see if they would make the song more meaningful and nope - just a lot of moons and wings and dreams. You get the picture. However, on the other hand, their voices are freakin’ awesome, and I bet you can get a really cool mix out of this song. There are a lot of interesting background elements. It’s also a plus that they’re looking good in the MV. This is the title track for the Japanese ballet movie Subaru. So it depends on you; see whether you like it or not.

2. Kiss the Baby Sky: I’m beginning to see this album is not exactly my style. I like their Purple Line days better than this “THE WORLD IS BEAUTIFUL!~ Rainbows! sunshine! happiness!” style they have going on here. Still, as the previous track, I have to admit it’s interesting in a way. You want to hate them, but can’t. This might be fun to sing with friends, if you’re in this kind of mood. It makes for some good exaggerations and light poking at DBSK.

3. 忘れないで (Don’t Forget): As soon as the song started, I was like oh crap, it’s a slow song. To make me endure such a song, I’d need it to be background music in an engrossing movie scene. It’s still better than Rain’s flat album (Rianism) at least. But you know what, at 2:06, I just gotta press stop. Not because that’s a crucial WTF moment - it’s not - but I simply can’t endure any more.

1/5 because while it was interesting and worth a first listen to see if this is your thing, they’re not songs that I forsee replaying in the near future.

2 AM Brings Sexy Back

Is it just me, or are hot guys in sunglasses the theme of every album cover these days? Not that there’s anything to complain about :P But in terms of looks, we may be going for interchangeable parts here.

This is my first time actually paying attention to 2 AM, and dude - were they always this hot?! Mind you, this group performs ballads, while their counterpart 2 PM is for dance and rap. Some higher-up made a HUGE mistake here, because the soulful ballad singers are way hotter.

Oh all right, so they couldn’t help that the good looking ones happened to prefer ballads. *sulks*

Review

1. 친구의 고백 (“A Friend’s Confession”): I should probably inform you from the start that I’m not really a ballads person, and I usually prefer fast-paced songs. It’s about a guy who loves this girl, but they’re good friends, and he always kept his feelings hidden. Now he’s confessing he loves her. The MV is boring, very boring, so I shall not post it here. I guess this song is for die-hard 2 AM fans; everyone else might wonder what’s special about it.

2. Lost: You have to admit that they do have the voice, though. I also have to admit that it’s not good to review ballads when ballads are not your thing.

3. 일단 돌아서지만: I like the beginning. This song progresses fast enough with a good beat to keep me interested, and I like how you can hear the different voices.

0/5, but don’t take my word for it, I’m biased. There is, however, nothing distinctive about this album. Let us hope for better works later (after all, SS501’s early albums were totally boring! but look at them now)

This entire post is from Rina’s Entertainment Notebook, which I just stumbled across, but check it out! Didn’t have a permalink, so I shall immortalize it here as best I can:

SS501’s Kim Hyun Joong made a shocking confession on the January 26th SBS Yashinmanman Show. He confesses that he almost died, not once, not twice but a SHOCKING three times over a period of six months while he lived as a runaway. He left home during his sophomore year of high school and lived like a bum with friends and local transients. He almost died from starvation, and was almost beaten to death. From what I understand he also was close to death by being almost fatally squished.

Kim Hyun Joong said that he was starving to the point that he and his friends ordered food at a restaurant, ate, and then ran away without paying with fistfuls of fried foods in hand. Wow, what a badass.

On the time he was almost beaten to death, Hyun Joong says that he and his ragtag group of friends ran into the a couple of drunken thugs and and got into a not-so-friendly argument, which resulted in his friend being beaten by the gangsters. Hyun Joong jumped in the middle of the beating, being beaten himself and luckily rendered the assailant unconscious by slipping on some newly fallen snow.

His final encounter with Death was when he was sleeping at an apartment complex construction site and was awaken just in time by the loud construction noises. Later he saw that the entire area was demolished except for the spot where he had been asleep just moments earlier.

And now it’s been revealed that this miracle boy runs a chicken shop with his friends (based on a pact he made with his preschool friends) and he also made 100 million won (around $75,000) by working all kinds of jobs. He says he hasn’t relied on his parents for money since junior high.

My, my… our little pretty boy has had quite the bad boy life. A Runaway, an actor, leader of SS501, CEO of a chicken house and now he can put escape artist on his resume too. Really? Is there anything this guy can’t do? Perhaps, act?

I swear, I think Koreans are so good at being all melodramatic that the PR people make this kinda stuff up. I mean, really how much more publicity do you need, homeboy?! We get it, you’re perfect. This guy was living on the streets and working his way into a pop group, and avoiding death and being best childhood friends with DBSK’s JaeJoong and TOP from Big Bang??!? Really? And now he’s on one of the top tv shows on air, working alongside a mere mortal like Lee MinHo? Yeah, we’re not worthy.

Review

1. 10 Points Out Of 10: Catchy, danceable, a song for audiences to follow along. Hmm, it is distinct too, because I can’t say it sounds like SS501, nor Rain, nor Super Junior, to name a few. But it’s not great. A good song for them to introduce themselves with. On the dancing side, they can b-boy and perform acrobatics, so it’ll be interesting to see their later works. If you want to see a different version of their MV where they stare at cleavage and nearly kiss each other, it’s up to you to find it!

2. Only You: As ballads go, they have a hard time to capture my attention, unless they’re Baek Ji Young or Ivy. This one doesn’t really make the cut. It’s okay, but I kind of spaced out for the latter half.

3. Angel: I was brought out of my stupor by this fresh dance beat… and then promptly spaced again. Hmm, I don’t really associate loud voices and this style with angels. OOH, NICE VOCALS going on around 3:00!

The rest are instrumentals or a remix, so I’ll leave that up to you.

Rated at 1 out of 5, contrary to the lead title. It’s really more of a 0.5, because 10 Points Out Of 10 isn’t as stellar as BoA’s Eat You Up. But they just debuted, whereas that was BoA’s 19th album, so hwaiting 2 PM!

Beat Of Angel - “BoA”

BoA’s United States debut album has been released on March 17th.

The lead song Eat Me Up has been out since October already. The album already reached #11! on Amazon’s best seller list, moving rapidly from as far down as #42. It’s her break into the American market, and it’s said that Britney Spears collaborated with her on one of the songs. In the small commerical before the MV, they play on BoA’s name as “Best Of America,” which is somewhat doubtful, but good luck! d.____.b

I found a really detailed review with plenty of pictures over at Vitamin Drop, so I recommend you go read that :) but here’s mine anyway.

1. I Did It For Love: boring. I didn’t quite catch what she did for love, either. Like many of the songs to follow, I feel they created some effects to blur BoA’s accent, but it’s still there.

2. Energetic: boring. BoA repeating “Put me on, put me on” doesn’t help matters. Feels brainwash-y, like robots or drones move stiffly to this song. May all almighty powers forbid the use of this song on a dance floor.

3. Did Ya: ooh, not going to sit around waiting for you? I like it. xD This song is upbeat and finally sounds a little more fun. “You should’ve loved me right, but you didn’t, did ya~” And there are these cool instrumental solos going on. I think this song will make it onto my playlist. You’ll go around humming but you didn’t did yaaa.

4. Look Who’s Talking: “They wanna give it to me”? I definitely see the Britney Spears influence here. But back we are to the drone singing of the so-called “Energetic.” It keeps saying the song is about her, and I’m like ok, good for you, but you should lay claim to a better song.

5. Eat You Up: Now here’s the song I’ve been waiting for! This totally makes up for the boredom I’ve just gone through. I don’t know how her thought process goes though. She’s saying if the dude moves any closer, she’ll go tigress and jump him, so much so that she feels in love 0_o

6. Obsessed: Does love usually sound this slutty? Oh well, at least it has a tad more life to it. Starts off with male panting, which continues in the background, not really what I want to hear on my iPod, thank you. Wow, I paused it and came back to hear “I’M OBSESSED WITH YOU TONIGHT!!” And then something about shame and crime…

7. Touched: I’m bored and want to go pursue other stuff, but I’ll persist- wait.. a bored reviewer is boring, so I’m going to stop here. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t! After all, there are people out there who like this album better than I do, as the other review shows.

1 out of 5. All I want from it is the single, “Eat You Up.” Edit: OK, and ‘did ya.’

Reasons to Love Yesungie

So I was over at Hwaiting.wordpress.com, looking for pictures of Super Junior’s Yesung (stalk much? yes. yes, i do), when I heard how neglected he is. Not much attention, few fans relative to other members, etc. I’m sure this is old news, probably dating back to the early days of their debut, but Yesung deserves attention no matter what!

Thus, I will post here what I commented over there:

OMG YESUNG!! awww poor yesungiee I’m inspired to list what I love about him, some of which has been stated above:

1. His intense gaze [see Hwaiting’s website for a good pic example]

2. Hotness

3. Voice. The first SuJu performance I saw was Don’t Don, and my favorite part is when Yesung pops out, and… sings omfgoiezejewoaihzldj *melts* And he inserted an intense gaze there too

(And that part in “U”~~ eeeek!)

4. Adorkable. He appeared on this show, and apparently he’s really shy of dancing outside a performance, and it was so cute.

5. His octopus dance on EHB, LOL. And then when he said that he can’t cry to G.O.D.’s sad song because it’s making him think of black bean noodles.

S501 - UR Man

OMG. I got this album ages ago, and didn’t pay proper attention to it until now! Granted, their dance is a little eyebrow-raising (e.g. dusting off a shoulder while standing on one foot), but they totally have my attention now. The lead singer Kim Hyun Joong looks quite distinctive o.O This song is like the more alluring, seductive version of FT Island; while the latter pours their heart out in a strong emotional way, SS501 is like.. is like… well, I don’t know, the kind of reaction that five hot men singing that they’re your man provokes. You get really into it~ ^_^b No worries though, my thoughts towards them are entirely pure, because I’m still spazzing over the amazing voice of member Heo Young Saeng~

1. Want it: Sounds like a good dance song. I really pay attention to the first few seconds of a song, and I was intrigued by this one. Transition to next song is great.

2. UR Man: For the longest time, I thought it was “You Are Man,” which struck me as very weird. But now that I actually listen, it is most definitely “Your Man” ^^;; From the kpop songs out there, this has its own flavor of uniqueness that I don’t think other groups have. I just don’t know what to call it. And omg, I will put this song on repeat for the few snatches of Heo Young Saeng’s voice. You can recognize it for its distinctiveness, he’s the high vocal of the group, it really stands out. I love this song, I can’t believe I wrote it off as weird before. However, I must note that since I don’t know their personalities, I don’t get any fuzzy feelings from hearing I’m your man. I have to emphasize the main attraction here is Young Saeng ~♥~ It’s kind of funny that he’s really good friends with DBSK’s Hero Jaejoong and SuJu’s Yesung, because he resembles both of them.

3. The One: Wasn’t very interested in this one.

4. 사랑인거죠: Oh god, a slow song, run away!! Wait… hmm… It’s actually kind of ok. That is very suspicious - zomg, I just looked up who sang this, and it’s Young Saeng’s solo! Alright, no more Y.S. fangirl screaming, let’s focus on the song. I really want to see him perform this (so I can’t quit cold turkey, sue me). The um, anonymous singer *cough* is really good. Voice is great.

5. Never Let You Go: Kyu Jong’s solo with Hyung Joon rapping. This song is okay, but annoying, just as beckery said. There’s all this background noise going on, and a strange siren effect. Goes by fast enough, though.

6. I Am: Dance inspiring, in a relaxed-finally-it’s-Friday-esque manner. I can imagine myself turning this song on if I was in a happy for no reason mood. You know, the smiling like an idiot kind of times.

3 out of 5, because UR Man is supremely awesome, Y.S. is to die for, and the album as a whole is easy to bear, but not all the songs are killer.

SE7EN: Friday Concert + Girls

I’ve listened repeatedly to Se7en’s new single, Girls, which is sung completely in English. First commentary: you hear a lot of “I like them girls that are hard to get, I like them girls, girls.” I have to wonder if this single is to refute any notions of gayness that his fans might perceive in his MV’s (he’s a little feminine). Second commentary: I’m not impressed.

However, surely he’s a cool guy to hang out with and all, so if you’re in New York this Friday, go chill at the Circle Nightclub:

Girl’s Generation - Gee

This is THE it song right now. Circumstances are such that I’m constantly with someone who watches a lot of Korean shows on YouTube, so while I’m off elsewhere like typing this post, I hear that song come up all. the. time. It’s like the new Tell Me craze, and it’s on all the talk shows.

‘Gee’ seems very bubbly and that type of annoying song that you initially think is stupid, but catchy and hard to resist. Their choreography certainly suits the large group of nine girls, since the MV mostly shows bare legs, and well I suppose it’s like one image split up into several; this is in direct contrast to SuJu’s new style, which did nothing to showcase thirteen guys.

Five Treasure Island is back with a new mini album! I’m excited ^^ It’s not just Hong Gi singing 99.9% of the songs anymore.

However, OH WON BIN left! (waaaaaaaaaaaaah) He was my favorite, especially his part in their song “Love Sick.” He was so totally awesome there *dies* I’ll write a special Won Bin post later, and in the meantime, investigate why he left.

1. 나쁜 여자야: OK, this title is a major turn-off. I’m a girl, and going *puke* And then three minutes later, they change to “I’m a bad man.” Great vocals, if not typical vocals, Hong Gi, but your song is weird. The song’s about how he was so sure her everlasting love was for him, and then she ditched him. How does he deal with this? By singing lame lyrics. And being all heartbroken instead of angry. I think the song would be much more interesting if they take an angsty angrier vibe to it. Plus, being a girl, I really feel awkward with this. Especially since before I played the song, I was wondering if they became masochistic.

2. 인형처럼: I love this song from the beginning. It’d be really awesome if a guy was singing this to you ^0^ 1:18 is to die for. But awww this song is so sad! ;;___;; Please, FT boys, tell me that you did not actually go through this *hugs* The singer is saying how he smiles everyday - like a doll. And he found this new girl, but when he looks at her, he sees his old love (‘you’). He says that the hobbies you shared with him, he now shares with the new girl. Yet, he cannot forget his former love, and by the sound of it, her memory haunts him… so he continues life… as a doll. Uwaaaaah =/ but it’s a beautiful song. 3. 마법: If you got all sad from the previous song, have no fear! This one immediately promises happy, head-over-heels mushy times! I’d love to see a performance of this one, especially that guitar riff. And it’s so definitely not Hong Gi singing this. Whoever you are, anonymous background guitarist-gone-singer, you rock, although I almost mistook you for a girl. And the lyrics match the mood, because it’s saying stuff like ‘you and me,’ ‘we make magic’ (uh..), ‘you love me’ and additional profuse admiration that the lucky girl makes the darkness in his heart go away. I like this song, too, but as I’m currently unattached, I’ll sympathize more with the previous song >:D (but truly, Like a Doll is very beautiful)

4. Missing You: Ooh, now this sounds familiar. It’s very Love Sick-ish, and it starts with an awesome orchestral piece, with some piano interspersed. I have this sudden urge to sing along, although I might exaggerate the emotional parts by making faces with my hand at my heart xD But dude, direct me to an MV for this! Ooh, around 2:40 is some awesome guitar solo going on there. Intense song, and a huge reminder of why Hong Gi’s the lead vocal (very nearly the only vocal). Good stuff, good stuff. Oh, I’m also getting the vibe that they’re really stuck in the past, though. Always talking about old loves. …ok, same boat. *high fives FT* xD

5. 그대와 나: This is another song with different vocals for once! It’s nice to have a break, these new voices are a lot more mellow. It’s nice. Nice, just like nice people - you know, the good-two-shoes sunshiny kind of nice, not really exciting or scandalizing or angsty. It’s a fairytale-ish song, hard to insert in my life anyway :)

6. 어쩌란 말이야: As if they heard what I just said, they go to prove me wrong, “We do too have angst!” The song brings us back to belting emotions deep from the heart. This is sad in a futile way… The singer is saying he wants her back, he loves only her, but again, it was the girl who up and left. The rap part is good, but not as hot as Won Bin’s in Love Sick. I just felt like =/ while listening to this.

Overall, I would rate this album a 10/10!! I’m going to listen to it over and over, the whole album is worth it!

Rain - “Rainism”

The song is mostly composed of Rain being sexy and saying “I wanna be a bad boy, I wanna be a bad-bad boy”; it gets pretty repetitive. Question: is the loincloth thing really necessary?

Although it’s been released in October of last year (2008), it’s still fresh on the scene today. However, the title song has been deemed inappropriate and banned by the Commission, due to references to ‘magic sticks.’ As SeoulBeats’ Ellie says, “Because apparently you can’t have sex in Korea.” That being said, here’s the track listing:

Review: 1 out of 5 (5 = highest)

1. Intro: there’s this weird background noise like scribbling on a board. Just plain odd, and really short.

2. Rainism: the opening is cool, upbeat and good rhythm. Has this mysterious quality to it, and drips smexy. Definitely one of those songs that’s better to watch than hear. By the end, there’s this awkward part where he repeats “ho! hey! ho! hey!” Ultimately, this song is forgetable.

3. Only You: the song just started, and I’m already bored. It didn’t get any better; the first few seconds show you exactly what the rest of the song is like. I sighed with relief when it was over, and sat through it for the sake of hearing it all. Completely, utterly uncompelling. Maybe if he had a good music video for it…

4. Love Story: it reminds me of the previous song. I’m starting to worry that I won’t like the whole album. This is a little better, but it’s probably not a song that you consciously seek out. It’s a Oh-look-it-appeared-when-I-shuffled-my-library kind of song. By 3:35, I want to skip to the next. Ah well it’s nearly over anyways…

5. 사랑이라는 건: the opening is promising. However, I’m starting to realize that Rain’s songs are mostly boring without his dancing. This song is ok. *desperately tries to come up with compliments* Um, his singing’s good here…?

6. 내 여자: The previous song ended with “hey baby,” and this song begins with the same line. And then “baby girl.” Why not just call this song “My baby” instead of “My girl”? By 1:04, I’m really bored. I have to admit that I might not be so blunt if I were listening to Super Junior, but they seem so sincere, sweet, and hard-working. Rain, I don’t know, I don’t know much except he exhales pheromones these days. Anyhow, ranting off topic meant that I finished the song without going insane.

7. You: Reminded me of Rainism. Is he trying to go Michael Jackson high voice here? Different style from the previous songs.

8. Fresh Woman: Ok, that title is weird, and hearing it is even worse. Fresh woman?! Have to say that it’s preferable to the previous songs, though.

Super Junior - Sorry Sorry

SuJu’s comeback! This the MV of the title song of their new album, and has a totally new style. They’re going with the smexy concept now. It’s really catchy, I guarantee that you’re going to be randomly humming this over the next few weeks. I’ve seen a lot of music videos in the two years I’ve followed kpop, and this is the first one that actually made me want to learn dance! It’d be so cool to follow along ;;____;;

The choreographers were Trent and Nick Bass. Personally, I think the demo video with these two are a lot better - sorry SuJu, this choreography doesn’t suit thirteen dancers (possibly 11 because Kibum’s visiting his ailing mother in America, and Heechul’s legs are not fully healed). So I’m going to upload the Bass video next.

I read that at 2:58 is a style called “tutting.” Here’s the wiki-definition: a contemporary abstract interpretive dance style that exploits the body’s ability to create geometric positions and movements, predominantly with the use of right angles.
